Sept. 25, 2006
The 2006-07 UCLA men's golf team begins its season today (Sept. 25) at the Opus Husky Invitational at Washington National Golf Club in Auburn, WA.
The Bruins, ranked second nationally in the GolfWorld preseason poll, return eight lettermen from last year's team that won 11 tournaments, including the Pac-10 Championship, and tied for seventh at the NCAA Tournament.
"The start of the season is finally upon us and we are excited," said Head Coach O. D. Vincent. "Our [preseason] retreat was great and the players are fired up."
The Bruins' annual retreat determined this week's lineup. The Gold Team will consist of juniors Daniel Im, Kevin Chappell and Craig Leslie and sophomores Erik Flores and Lucas Lee. Seniors Chris Heintz and Peter Campbell, sophomore James Lee and freshmen Jason Kang and Charlie Harris will compete as individuals.
"Washington National is a very long, demanding course," said Vincent, who enters his fifth season with 29 career tournament titles. "The weather is supposed to be good."
Washington National will play to a par of 72 over 7,050 yards. The tournament format is 54 holes of stroke play over two days to determine team and individual champions.
