College Station, Texas - Three UCLA men's tennis players won first-round matches Wednesday to advance to the second round in singles at the NCAA Men's Tennis Championships at Texas A&M University.
Bruin sophomore Marcin Matkowski was the only Bruin to register an upset on the day, as he defeated Javier Taborga of Notre Dame, 6-4, 6-3. Taborga was a 9-16 seed in the tournament. With the win, Matkowski advances to the second round and will take on San Diego State's Olivier Maiberger on Thursday.
Sophomore Tobias Clemens also advanced to the round of 32 Wednesday, defeating Wisconsin's Danny Westerman, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. He will next face UNLV's Thomas Schneiter. Clemens is a 9-16 seed in the championships.
The final Bruin to advance Wednesday was junior Rodrigo Grilli, who defeated Brian Wilson of Illinois, 6-3, 7-5. Grilli will take on 9-16 seeded John Paul Fruttero of Cal on Thursday.
Also on Thursday, the NCAA Doubles Championships are set to begin and the Bruins have two teams entered in that draw. UCLA's Matkowski and Jean-Julien Rojer are the tournament's No. 1 seed and will take on Tulane's Michael Kogan/Victor Romero in the first round. Clemens and Lassi Ketola face 5-8 seeded Johan Brunstrom/Eric Cohn of Southern Methodist.
