Rancho Cordova, CA - UCLA Women's Rowing placed fifth in the Division I Eight Repechage today, May 27, at the NCAA Championships. The Bruins will compete against Michigan State, Wisconsin and Syracuse for places 13-16 at 11am, on Saturday, May 28. Sacramento State is hosting the NCAA Championships which take place today through Sunday, May 29 in Rancho Cordova, CA at Lake Natoma.
The Bruins were in fifth place at the start of the race, when they reached the 500 meter mark in a little over two seconds behind then leaders USC. At the halfway mark, Wisconsin edged in front of UCLA, picking up a one second lead over the Bruins. Michigan came in front of USC for the race lead by less then one second at this point. At the 1500 meter mark, UCLA pulled away from Wisconsin. Tennessee overcame USC at this point for second place, leading the Trojans by less than a second. At the completion of the race, UCLA finished ahead of Wisconsin by one second, and over eight seconds ahead of Syracuse.
Michigan captured a first place finish, with Tennessee taking second, and USC came in third place. These three teams will be advancing to the semifinals tomorrow. Michigan State finished the race in fourth place, UCLA came in for fifth place, Wisconsin completed in sixth place and Syracuse finished the race in seventh.
The Bruins were one of the seven teams to race in the Repechage after placing fifth in their race earlier today. UCLA placed fifth in a heat that contained crews from Princeton, Harvard, Ohio State and Michigan.
The varsity eight's race on Saturday will be their last race of the 2005 season, and the last race of five senior's collegiate rowing careers. Kristin Bixel, Monica Grova, Kelsey Hicks, Jessica Rogers and Emina Ong will experience their last race at the NCAA Championships, in search of a place 13-16, an accomplishment for a team only in its fourth year as a varsity sport at UCLA.
