LOS ANGELES -For the second time this season, the seventh-ranked UCLA women's tennis team handed Pepperdine a loss, defeating the Waves, 6-1 Wednesday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The Bruins, who also defeated Pepperdine, 5-2 in Malibu earlier in the year, improve to 13-6 with the win. The Waves drop to 10-8.
UCLA, winners of seven of its last eight, got on the board quickly with three victories on all three doubles courts.
Taking a 1-0 advantage into singles play, the Bruins quickly posted three straight singles wins to clinch the match at 4-0. First to finish was court No. 5, where Lauren Fisher dispatched of Merve Asimgil, 6-1, 6-2. Both Sarah Gregg and Feriel Esseghir followed up fisher with a pair of straight-set victories of their own. Gregg defeated Karin Schlapbach, 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 4 spot, while Esseghir knocked off Charlotte Vernaz by the same score at No. 3 singles.
Bruin sophomore Laura Gordon gave the Bruins a 5-0 advantage when she battled back from a difficult second set to win, 6-2, 0-6, 6-3 over Eva Dickes at the No. 6 position.
Pepperdine registered its only point of the day at the No. 1 position, where 33rd-ranked Natalie Braverman upset 16th-ranked Jackie Carleton, 6-4, 6-4. In the final match of the afternoon, Bruin freshman Daniela Bercek defeated Caroline Raba, 4-6, 7-6(4), (10-7) at the No. 2 position.
UCLA returns to action this Friday, facing No. 6 Washington at the LATC beginning at 1:30 p.m.
