UCLA Soccer Teams Ranked In Pre-Season Top 15

July 26, 2000

Nineteen-ninety-nine NCAA men's soccer semifinalist UCLA earned the pre-season No. 3 ranking by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). The UCLA women's soccer team, which advanced to the third round of the 1999 NCAA Championships, earned a No. 14 pre-season ranking.

The UCLA men, guided by 1999 NSCAA Far West Region Coach of the Year Todd Salda?a, return four starters from last year's team, including leading goal scorer McKinley Tennyson, Jr (12 goals, 31 points) and all-conference picks Shaun Tsakiris and Ryan Lee. The Bruin men also picked up 10 top recruits, including four members of the U.S. U-17 National Team, which placed fourth at the 1999 World Championships. In September alone, the Bruins will face top-ranked Indiana and second-ranked Santa Clara on the road. In addition, they will meet 12th-ranked Washington and 23rd-ranked Stanford twice.

The Bruin women, guided by U.S. U-21 National Team coach Jillian Ellis, return All-Pac-10 selections Tracey Milburn, Venus James and Staci Duncan. Newcomers to the program include U.S. National Team member Nandi Pryce and U.S. U-18 National Team member Sarah-Gayle Swanson. UCLA opens the 1999 season against No. 6 Clemson and also plays No. 7t Stanford, No. 10 Florida, No. 17 USC and No. 24 San Diego.
