Former Bruin Amy Acuff advanced to the finals of the high jump on Thursday after clearing 6-4.75 in the preliminary rounds at the Athens Olympics. She was the only American to advance to the finals in the high jump after Tisha Waller and Chaunte Howard failed to advance.
"Whew! A had a good jump tonight," said Acuff. "It's good to get past the first round, to get past the jitters and the rust from sitting around for two weeks. I feel good about my chances to medal. I think it will take two meters (to medal.)"
The US track and field team had been training in Crete in preparation for the Olympics and Acuff felt it improved her concentration.
"Training camp was great; in a way it was good to be isolated in a foreign country away from family and media and other distractions."
Acuff will jump for a medal on Saturday in the finals of the high jump. Monique Henderson is scheduled to run in the 4x400m on Friday and possibly Saturday.
