2003 UCLA WOMEN 'S VOLLEYBALL Nov.6-7 *at Arizona/Arizona State *Tucson/Tempe,AZ

UCLA travels to Arizona in a three-way tie for second place in the Pac-10 standings with Stanford and California.The Bruins split with the Arizona schools the first time through the Pac-10 schedule,falling to Arizona before sweeping ASU in October.

Last season,the Bruins opened their Pac-10 season by dropping a pair of matches in the state of Arizona.The three-way tie for second place will break up this weekend,as California and Stanford will play each other in Palo Alto on Friday night while the Bruins are in Arizona to face the Wildcats and Sun Devils.


The Bruins,who have moved up to a season-high sixth in the AVCA/USA Today Coaches Poll, recorded three victories last night against Cal State Northridge,Washington State and Washington.

In a non-conference match on Tuesday night in Northridge,the Bruins had three players with double-figure kills,led by Brynn Murphy with 18.She also had a team-high 21.5 points as she added six blocks to her effort.On Friday night in Pauley Pavilion,the Bruins defeated Washington State 3-1,with four players recording double-figure kills including Murphy (16)and Heather Cullen with 15.Murphy again led UCLA with 17.5 points,while Cullen checked in at 17.0 points in the match.

Saturday saw a matchup between No.10 Washington and eighth-ranked UCLA,with the Bruins dropping game one 30-23 before rebounding to win the next three games 30-26,30-26,30-26. Brittany Ringel led the Bruins with 14 kills in the match,while Cullen had a team-high 17 points, turning in 11 kills,10 digs and a career-high eight blocks.Four of those blocks were solo efforts,a career-high total,while four assists gave Cullen a hand in eight of UCLA 's 14 team blocks.

UCLA VS.ARIZONA (11-12,5-7 PAC-10)

UCLA holds a 41-12 all-time record against the Wildcats with a 16-7 record in Arizona.The Wildcats are coached by Dave Rubio,who is in his 12th season at Arizona.He has a record of 228-118 at UA and a career record of 348-159 in his 17th season as a collegiate head coach.Last Time (Oct. 10, 2003): The Wildcats notched their first Pac-10 win of the season with a 3-1 win over the Bruins in Pauley Pavilion.Colby Lyman and Brynn Murphy led the Bruins with 10 kills apiece,while Cira Wright had a team-high 12.5 points with eight kills,two solo blocks and five block assists in the match.


The Bruins have a 49-6 all-time record against the Sun Devils,and UCLA owns a 20-4 advantage on the road against ASU.Arizona State is coached by first-year mentor Brad Saindon.He has a 260-159 in his 13th season as a collegiate head coach.Last Time (Oct. 11, 2003): The Bruins recorded a three-game sweep of the Sun Devils as the Bruins hit .457 as a team in the third and final game.Eight Bruins combined for a team total of 46 kills in the match,while only one player, Brynn Murphy,had double-figure kills with 11 to go with a .476 attack percentage and only one error in the match.Murphy,Wright and Heather Cullen tied for a team-high 13.5 points in the win.

HEAD COACH Andy Banachowski

In his 37th season on the Bruin bench,UCLA head coach Andy Banachowski remains one of the top coaches in his profession.On Sept.1,2001,in Hawaii,he became the first collegiate women 's volleyball coach in history to record 900 career wins,and is just the second collegiate volleyball coach for either gender to reach that milestone.UCLA men 's coach Al Scates,for whom Banachowski was a setter during his collegiate career,posted his 1,000th career win in February, 2000.The first women 's volleyball coach to be inducted into the National Volleyball Hall of Fame in Holyoke,MA,Banachowski currently has a career record of 958-239 (.800),and has coached the Bruins to six national championships,including three NCAA titles.


UCLA returns to Pauley Pavilion for its final two home matches of the 2003 regular season.The Bruins play host to Stanford on Thu.,Nov.13 and California on Senior Night,Fri.,Nov.14.
