Los Angeles, Calif. - Playing in an MPSF conference matchup at home, the No. 3 UCLA women's water polo team defeated the No. 7 San Diego State Aztecs, 12-3. UCLA moves its record to 16-2, 7-0 in the MPSF conference, while San Diego State drops to 9-5, 3-2.
UCLA took charge of this game from the start, building an 8-0 lead through the third quarter before SDSU scored its first goal. At 3:41 in the first quarter, the Bruins put themselves on the scoreboard with a goal from Thalia Munro off an assist by Molly Cahill. Freshman Anne Belden would add another goal to put UCLA up 2-0 at the end of the first.
In the second quarter, the Bruin offense continued its impressive play. Four different Bruins scored, giving the team a 6-0 half time lead.
On the first UCLA possession in the third quarter, Brittany Rowe scored her first of two goals in the game. Domanic tossed in another at 4:48 to make the score 8-0. At 4:20 in the third, the Aztecs scored their first goal with a shot from Savanah Kelley. UCLA scored two more in the quarter to take a 10-1 lead.
In the fourth, the scoring was more even, with each team getting two goals. Rowe and senior Katherine Belden scored the opening goals of the quarter followed by SDSU goals from Ashley McCullum and Stacy Werner.
Emily Feher had six saves for UCLA and Brittany Fullen had one. Sarah Kilgore had six saves for the Aztecs in the game. The ejection count for the game was seven against UCLA and eight against San Diego State. UCLA had 25 shots on goal compared to San Diego State's 21. Rowe and Katie Rulon were the leading scorers for UCLA with two goals apiece. Ten different Bruins scored.
UCLA will face Loyola Marymount on Sunday, March 19th at LMU. The next exciting Bruin home games are on March 25th and 26th against Maryland and Occidental.
