Gordon Earns National Sportsmanship Award

Stanford, Calif. - UCLA women's tennis player Laura Gordon was named the 2006 recipient of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) Cissie Leary Sportsmanship Award on Monday evening at the NCAA Championships at Stanford University.

Gordon, a senior captain from Aspen, Colo., played No. 1 singles and doubles for the Bruins in 2006, helping UCLA advance to the round of 16 at the NCAA Championships. She currently owns a 25-11 overall singles record, including a 17-5 mark in doubles play with partner Riza Zalameda. Gordon received an at-large selection for both the singles and doubles draws at the NCAAs.

"We are extremely proud of Laura for winning this award," said UCLA head coach Stella Sampras Webster. "It is well deserved and a real tribute to her tremendous character. I strongly feel that she demonstrates the sportsmanship, commitment and work ethic that every coach wants their student-athletes to have."

The ITA Cissie Leary Sportsmanship Award is given by the to a junior or senior that has demonstrated extraordinary commitment and unwavering dedication to her team; with exceptional hard work, courage, sportsmanship and a positive, cooperative attitude that makes people around her play better. Scholastic, extracurricular achievements and playing accomplishments are also part of the selection criteria.
