WEEKLY RECAP: THE UNITED STATES NATIONAL TEAM, APRIL 24, 2004
Team USA avenged a 3-2 lose to the Bruins last season by beating UCLA 11-5 in Los Alamitos. The Bruins fell behind 6-0 at halftime, but managed to shut down a powerful National Team attack in the third period while a goal by Molly Cahill made it 6-1 after three periods. In the fourth period the Bruins would find the back of the net four times, but would give up five goals. Katherine Belden scored twice, Cahill scored her second goal of the game and Jenna Murphy scored once in the fourth period. Bruin alumnae Nicolle Payne recorded six saves for Team USA and Robin Beauregard scored two goals. Current Bruins who are redshirting the 2004 season, Natalie Golda and Thalia Munro each scored once.
MPSF CHAMPIONSHIPS: LOS ALAMITOS, CALIFORNIA (HOSTED BY LONG BEACH STATE)
The Bruins enter the MPSF Championships as the third seed with a 9-2 MPSF record. UCLA lost to first seed USC and second seed Stanford in the regular season. Last season as the third seed UCLA defeated Hawaii and USC before falling to Stanford in sudden victory overtime. However, UCLA would earn the at-large bid and would defeat Stanford in the NCAA Championships to win their second NCAA title and sixth overall National Championships. On Friday the Bruins will face the winner of Arizona State-California. If UCLA wins they will play at 6:15 PM on Saturday. Another Bruin victory will put UCLA in the championship game on Sunday at 6:15 PM.
