Madison, Wis. - The No. 11 UCLA women's tennis team fell to top-seeded Stanford, 6-1 Friday in the quarterfinals at the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships hosted by the University of Wisconsin. With the loss, UCLA falls to 2-2 on the year and will take on Vanderbilt in a consolation match on Saturday.
Despite an 8-4 victory at No. 2 doubles by UCLA's Daniela Bercek/Feriel Esseghir, Stanford claimed the one point awarded for doubles play with wins at court Nos. 1 and 3.
Singles play was much of the same, as Stanford quickly posted three victories to take a 4-0 advantage and clinch the dual match. However, all three matches did go to a third set. Esseghir fell to No. 21 Alice Barnes, 6-2, 2-6, 6-0 at the No. 2 position, while 61st-ranked Emilia Anderson of Stanford defeated Laura Gordon, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 at the No. 6 spot. Lauren Barnikow, ranked No. 20 in the nation, clinched the match for the Cardinal when she outlasted Sarah Gregg, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 at No. 4 singles.
With the match already decided, Bruin junior Lauren Fisher pulled out of her match with Theresa Logar in order to be ready for tomorrow. Fisher is slowly working her way back into singles play after sitting out last year with an injury.
Bercek, who has played No. 2 for UCLA all season, sat out of singles play due to illness.
The Bruins and Commodores will play at 3:00 p.m. (CST) on Saturday.
