Redshirt sophomore catcher Chris Denove has been named to the Johnny Bench Award watch list. The award, which has been in existence since 2000, is given to the nation's top catcher. Last season, the honor went to Stanford's Ryan Garko.
The watch list, which currently includes 45 nominees, will be cut to ten semi-finalists on May 20, 2004. The three finalists will be named on June 3, prior to the start of the NCAA Regionals. In the final step of voting, the winner will be announced on June 30, in Wichita after the College World Series.
The Agoura Hills native has started every game behind the plate for the Bruins this season. A member of the 2003 Academic All-Pac-10 Second Team, Denove is currently hitting .232 with 13 RBI on the year. He also hit a walk-off home run in the 12th inning to give UCLA a 3-2 win over UC Santa Barbara on March 2.
