The current Bruins built a 6-2 halftime advantage and hung on to defeat the former Bruin squad, 12-7 at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center on Sunday. Brad Greiner and Logan Powell led the team with two goals each.
Greiner, David Pietsch and Josh Hewko each scored in the first quarter to give the current Bruins a 3-1 lead after the first frame. Goalkeeper Joseph Axelrad also helped the cause, by blocking a penalty shot in the period.
Tyler Krikorian, Peter Belden and Michael March each found the back of the net in the second quarter, to lead UCLA to a 6-2 lead over the former Bruins at the half. Andy Bailey scored for the former Bruins in the second period.
The teams each scored twice in the third frame as Brett Ormsby and Thomas Foley each recorded a goal in the frame for the current team, while Alexis Rousseau and Jeff Chase each scored. Chase was close to scoring twice in the frame, but goalkeeper Will Didinger blocked Chase's four-meter shot.
It looked as if the former Bruins could mount a comeback late in the game, when the secret weapons of Cody and Bryce Moore were revealed. Both nephews of former Bruin great Jim Toring, the tandem gave the former Bruins a boost in the final frame. While 10-year old Cody worked hard on the defensive end, seven-year old Bryce scored twice in the fourth quarter. Bruin assistant coach Matt Armato also found the back of the net in the fourth after a long and frustrating day in the pool.
However, current Bruin goals from Powell, Greiner and David Shortenhaus in the final period kept the former team from earning the win.
UCLA will return to intercollegiate play next weekend when it heads to the So Cal Tournament at UC Irvine.
