June 21, 2003

Robert (Bob) L. Howland, the father of Bruin men's head basketball coach Ben Howland, died Thursday night at a Marin County hospital from a head injury following a fall.

On May 24, Howland was attending a family wedding/picnic when he fell and died from complications of that fall.

Howland, who was 76, was a Presbyterian minister for 33 years. He was ordained in Lebanon, OR on May 28, 1957, the same day that Bruin head coach Ben Howland was born. From 1960-72, he served with the University of California at Santa Barbara Religious Conference and was also minister at the Goleta Presbyterian Church. From 1972-90, the Howland family moved to Cerritos, where he served seven churches in the greater Los Angeles area. Howland retired in 1994 and returned to Santa Barbara.

Born July 27, 1926 in Downers Grove, IL, Howland was a U. S. Army veteran (1944-46) and moved to California in 1948. He graduated from San Diego State in 1953 and from the Princeton Seminary in 1956.

Howland married his wife, Mary Clark, on Dec. 27, 1952 (they celebrated their 50th anniversary last December). His immediate survivors include his wife, Mary, and their four children - daughter, Barbara (44) and sons, Steve (49), Ben (46) and Jonathan (42).
