INDIANAPOLIS - Meb Keflezighi has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after successfully defending his 2001 U.S. 12k Cross Country title at the U.S. Winter Cross Country Championships on Sunday in Vancouver, Washington.
Keflezighi edged out Abdi Abdirahman to win one of the closest U.S. Cross Country Championship races ever, with both competitors finishing the course in 34:45. Keflezighi is the American Record holder at 10,000m (27:13.98) and finished second at 10,000m at the 2001 GMC Envoy Outdoor Track & Field Championships. At the 2001 World Cross Country Championships, Keflezighi finished 13th overall at 12k in 40:46.
During his four-year (1995-98) UCLA career, Keflezighi won four NCAA individual distance titles in 1997 - NCAA Indoor 5000m (13:52.72), NCAA Outdoor 5000m (13:44.17)/10,000m (28:51.18) and the NCAA Cross Country championship.
