UC Irvine Quotes
Head Coach Dave Serrano
"I think we came in with the right approach against UCLA, breaking down numbers. When the strategy didn't seem to be working we tried to change it up a little. It's frustrating when we have guys hitting fly balls who don't usually hit fly balls, but I think this ballpark is great for our style of play."
On today's play of game:
"I thought it was much a better game than the previous two games we've played. We've done silly things. We want to win for each other and I think sometimes we just try too hard. But that's what it's really all about; going out there and winning for each other."
On Orloff playing as a freshman:
"He's definitely beyond his years as a baseball player. To be honest, he shouldn't even be playing as a freshman, but he's an overachiever and we're lucky to have him out there on the field."
RHP Justin Cassel
On the walk he gave up:
"It was unfortunate because he ended up coming around to score. We just didn't end up on the winning side today"
Shortstop Ben Orloff
On the atmosphere as a freshman:
"It's definitely more exciting and little bit more nerve-wrecking. But it's great to play here and be at this regional."
Head Coach John Savage
"It was quite a game. It was as good a game as any you'll see in the Regionals. It could have gone either way. It was a hard fought game, and fortunately we ended up on the right side."
On pitcher Hector Ambriz
"He's such an aggressive player. I just told him to settle down and trust his stuff because he has very good stuff. When he's aggressive and stays over the rubber, he's as good as there is out there."
On the line drives off of Ambriz
"He took the first ball off of his right wrist, and the other one, he tried to barehand the ball. He's a gamer, and it's going to take a lot more than that to get him out of the game. I didn't think for one second he would come out unless it's broken."
On playing with several freshman in the lineup
"They've played well all year. They started from the get-go against Fresno State and Miami, and they haven't stopped. We're going to rely heavily on them for the rest of the tournament."
On facing his former team, UC Irvine
"It's funny to see those guys (the players he recruited). They've come a long way. They're a good team. There is a good chance that we'll see them again. The program is on its way up."
On Ryan Babineau's home run to tie the game
"When they got two runs, the momentum switched. Then when he hit the home run, it was a 2-2 game. He hit it hard and it cut through the wind. We knew the game was far from over. We were back in the game."
"Coach always tells me that I have to go out there and set the tone for the weekend. The line drive really didn't affect me at all. Once I threw some warm-up pitches I was fine."
"It was my first regional game. I'm a Friday guy and a leader. I have to go out there and set the tone."
