Men's Basketball Schedule Announced

July 8, 2002

Facing Duke at the Wooden Tradition in Indianapolis (Saturday, Nov. 30), playing at Kansas (Saturday, Dec. 21), hosting Michigan (Saturday, Dec. 28) and St. John's (Saturday, Jan. 11) in Pauley Pavilion and traveling to Georgetown (Saturday, Feb. 8, MCI Center) are the nonconference highlights of UCLA's 2002-03 men's basketball schedule.

The Bruins' upcoming schedule will feature eight teams that were in last season's NCAA Tournament (Duke, "Sweet 16"; Kansas, "Final Four"; USC; St. John's; Arizona, "Sweet 16"; Stanford; California; Oregon, "Elite Eight") and one NIT participant (Arizona State). UCLA also advanced to the NCAA "Sweet 16" last season. It was the Bruins' third consecutive "Sweet 16" appearance and fifth in the last six seasons under head coach Steve Lavin (the only other current coach to accomplish this feat is Duke's Mike Krzyzewski). Lavin is entering his seventh season as the Bruin head coach.

The Wooden Tradition in Indianapolis (Conseco Fieldhouse) is a double-header, featuring UCLA vs. Duke and Purdue vs. Louisville. The Bruins open their nonconference home season in Pauley Pavilion on Tuesday, Nov. 26 vs. the University of San Diego, coached by former Bruin player and assistant coach Brad Holland; on Sunday, Dec. 8 hosting Long Beach State and on Saturday, Dec. 14, UCLA will host the University of Portland, coached by another former Bruin player and assistant coach, Michael Holton.

UCLA opens 2003 Pacific-10 Conference play on Thursday, Jan. 2 at Washington, coached by former Bruin assistant Lorenzo Romar and on Saturday, Jan. 4 at Washington State. The Bruins open home conference play in Pauley Pavilion on Thursday, Jan. 9 vs. USC, coached by former Bruin All-American Henry Bibby.

The Pac-10 Postseason Tournament is Thursday, March 13-Saturday, March 15 and will again be held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Last season, UCLA's 2001-02 schedule was rated by Basketball Times as the No. 3 strongest schedule in the U. S., trailing No. 1 Arizona and No. 2 North Carolina. The Pac-10 Conference was rated the No. 1 conference in the U. S. (based on strength of schedule among member schools). Other Pac-10 schools in the 2001-02 Top 10 schedule ratings included - No. 8 Washington and No. 9 Washington State (three other conference schools were in the No. 10-No. 20 range - No. 12 Stanford, No. 19 USC and No. 20. Arizona State).
