Bruins Begin Busy Week With Pepperdine

April 5, 2004

UCLA to Begin Five-Match Homestand This Wednesday . . .
Ninth-ranked UCLA (12-6; 3-1 Pac-10) will kickoff its five-match homestand this Wednesday, facing Pepperdine at the Los Angeles Tennis Center beginning at 1:30 p.m. The Bruins will return to the LATC on Friday, hosting No. 6 Washington (17-3; 4-1 Pac-10) also at 1:30 p.m. UCLA's busy week concludes with Washington State on Saturday at Noon.

Bruins Register Split in Bay Area . . .
UCLA began its Bay Area trip with a close 4-3 victory over No. 11 Cal last Friday. The match came down to the No. 1 singles court, where Bruin sophomore Jackie Carleton defeated Jieun Jacobs, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. The Bruins had a much tougher time against top-ranked and undefeated Stanford on Saturday, falling 7-0 to the Cardinal. UCLA's only victory on the day came at No. 2 doubles, where Carleton and Feriel Esseghir defeated Alice Barnes/Amber Liu, 8-5.

McGoodwin Could Return This Weekend . . .
Bruin freshman Alex McGoodwin, who has been out nearly two months with a stomach strain, is on the verge of returning to the court. McGoodwin was playing at No. 4 singles prior to her injury and owns a 4-4 overall record. She was recently cleared to practice and although she will likely miss the Bruins' match against Pepperdine this Wednesday, she is probable for Friday's showdown with No. 6 Washington. The last time she took the court was against Fresno State back on Feb. 13.

Bercek Streak Stopped at Six . . .
Bruin freshman Daniela Bercek was riding a six-match winning streak heading into the Stanford match on Saturday and it looked as if she was going to make it seven in a row after convincingly defeating 15th-ranked Alice Barnes, 6-0 in the first set. However Barnes battled back, winning the next two 6-4, 6-4. That loss was only the third of the season for Bercek, who currently stands at 15-3 overall.

Carleton Leads Bruins in Victories . . .
Sophomore Jackie Carleton leads the Bruins in singles victories with 17 thus far. That statistic is even more impressive when you consider that she has played every dual match at the No. 1 position. Following Carleton in the win column are Sarah Gregg and Daniela Bercek with 15 wins apiece.

UCLA Moves Up to No. 9 . . .
UCLA jumped a spot to No. 9 last week when the rankings were released on Mar. 30. Individually, Jackie Carleton is ranked No. 14 in singles and is followed by No. 44 Daniela Bercek and No. 78 Alex McGoodwin. Mostly due to their results from the fall, Carleton and Lauren Fisher are ranked No. 10 in doubles. New team and individual rankings will be released this Tuesday (Apr. 6).
