Final Stats

BERKELEY, CA - A sixth-inning rally by California provided two runs on Friday afternoon, which proved to be enough offense to hand UCLA (34-9, 7-8 Pac-10) its ninth loss of the 2004 season. Offensively, Caitlin Benyi provided two of UCLA's five hits with a double and her 16th home run of the season in the loss.

After Vicky Galindo led off the bottom of the first with a hit for the Golden Bears, she was caught stealing and Cal never had a runner past first base for the first five innings of the game. Bruin starting pitcher Keira Goerl recorded four strikeouts through the first five innings, scattering four hits. Those baserunners were erased, as the Bruins converted four fielders choice plays with the out recorded on the lead runner at second base.

Meanwhile, Caitlin Benyi had connected on a two-out double in the top of the first inning, but she was stranded at second base when Claire Sua popped out to end the inning. The Bruins did not have another base runner until Caitlin Benyi broke UCLA's three-game home run drought on the first pitch of her at-bat in the fourth inning, taking her 16th home run of the season into the parking lot over the fence in left center field to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead.

The Golden Bears opened the bottom of the sixth inning as Lindsay James drew a four-pitch walk to lead off the inning. She was sacrificed to second base bay Haley Woods, and advanced to second and third base on two consecutive wild pitches by Goerl to score the game's tying run. Kaleo Eldredge beat out an infield single on the following pitch, extending the Cal rally. Jessica Pamanian followed Eldredge's hit with a long single of her own, scoring Eldredge from first base and taking second on the throw to the plate to give Cal the 2-1 lead after six innings.

In their final at-bat of the game, the Bruins looked to put together a one-out rally, capitalizing on singles from Emily Zaplatosch and Lisa Dodd to have runners on first and second with one out, but the next two Bruin pinch-hitters were unable to connect, popping out and lining out to end the inning and the game, with Cal winning 2-1.

Goerl took the loss in the circle for the Bruins, striking out five and walking two for her seventh loss of the season opposite 20 wins. Offensively, Caitlin Benyi was the leader for the Bruins, going 2-for-3 with her 10th double and 16th home run of the season. Benyi was responsible for two of UCLA's five hits on the day, and both of UCLA's extra-base hits in the game.

The Bruins return to action on Saturday afternoon with a 2 pm first pitch against No. 6 Stanford. Today's game will air in Southern California at 2 am on Sunday, May 9, on FOX Sports West, as well as two airings on FOX West 2: May 11 at 3 pm and May 14 at 1 pm.
