Men's Track Team Opens up the Indoor Season This Weekend

Jan. 26, 2006

Art Venegas and the UCLA men's track and field team will open up the indoor season this weekend as they compete at the UW Husky Indoor Invitational in Seattle, WA on Friday and Saturday.

This weekend's meet features several solid track programs including BYU, Oregon, Washington and Stanford, along with several club teams and unattached athletes.

On Friday, the Distance Medley Relay team of All-American seniors Erik Emilsson and Craig Everhart, along with junior Micky Cobrin and sophomore Mike Haddan will compete. Last season at the NCAA Indoor Championships, the DMR team of Ben Aragon, Jon Rankin, Martell Munguia and Craig Everhart finished second as all four earned All-American honors.

The men will also field a 4x400m relay team (which has been ranked No. 8 by Trackwire's "Dandy Dozen") comprised of Everhart, freshman Elijah Wells, junior Tracy Sessions and sophomore David Shipp. The 4x400m looks to be a strong even for the Bruins this season as the coaching staff has done an exceptional job bringing in quarter-mile talent.

All-American and 2005 fourth-place finisher in the 400m hurdles at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, Brandon Johnson, will open up the season in the 60m. Everhart will also compete in the 400m (ranked No. 10 in Trackwire's "Dandy Dozen", along with Shipp, Sessions and Wells. Emilsson, also an All-American at the 2005 Outdoor Championships (steeple, 8th) will also run the one mile race.

Junior David Shortenhaus, who was a provisional qualifier in the pole vault last season before an injury shut his season down, will compete in that event on Saturday, along with senior Dave Murphy, junior Mike Landers, and sophomore Zack Miller.

Several freshmen will make their debut in UCLA uniforms as Alex Pearlstone and Garland West compete in the 60m. Vache Sevajian, a redshirt freshman, will compete in his first meet as a Bruin in the shot put. Luke Barr will also have his first UCLA meet as he competes in the high jump.

Jon Rankin, whose eligibility ended in 2005, will also open up the indoor season in Seattle this weekend. Rankin, who had an incredibly successful season last year, will compete in the 3000m.
