STANFORD, CA - The fifth-ranked men's water polo team (8-4) won twice on the second day of the Nor Cal Tournament to claim fifth-place at Stanford. UCLA avenged an earlier loss to Long Beach State with a 11-10 overtime victory in its first match of the day, before defeating UC San Diego 6-4 in the fifth-place match.
Joseph Axelrad collected ten saves to lead UCLA to the 6-4 victory over UC San Diego to clinch fifth at the NorCal Tournament. The Bruins led throughout the entire game, while Brett Ormsby scored three goals for UCLA.
Ted Peck scored the winning goal in the second overtime to help the Bruins defeat #6 Long Beach State, 11-10. Erik Geoffroy, who scored five goals for the 49ers, sent the game in overtime with a goal at eight seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 9-9. Peck had put the Bruins in front, 9-8, with a goal at 1:21 remaining.
California won the tournament title with a win over second-ranked Stanford in the championship match.
UCLA will return to Sunset Canyon Recreation Center on Wednesday afternoon with an exhibition match againt the U.S. National Team at 3:15 p.m. The Bruins will also host St. Francis at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday.
