LOS ANGELES - The Bruins open their home schedule this week, playing host to Cal State-Northridge and No. 3 Fresno State at Easton Stadium this week. UCLA has already faced and defeated the third-ranked Bulldogs once this season, earning a 5-2 win last weekend in the rain-shortened Campbell/Cartier Tournament in Poway, Calif.

Northridge was also involved in the Campbell/Cartier Tournament and finished with a 1-4 record on the weekend. For the 2000 season, the Matadors hold a 3-6-1 record. The Bulldogs are 5-2 on the young season and were ranked third in the NFCA/USA Today preseason poll. UCLA holds a 26-9 all-time record against the Matadors., and an identical mark against Fresno State.

Two Bruins Named All-Tournament at Campbell/Cartier

The Bruins placed two athletes on the Campbell/Cartier All-Tournament Team, with Courtney Dale and Natasha Watley earning the honors. Dale hit .412 for the weekend with four RBI, while pitching 19 innings with a 1.42 ERA and 11 strikeouts as compared to just three walks. Watley hit safely in all five games on the weekend, compiling a .765 batting average with nine runs scored, a double, two triples and her first career home run. Additionally, she finished with a 1.235 slugging percentage and .789 on-base percentage while stealing two bases on three attempts. Watley led the Bruins in nearly every offensive category in the five-game span of the tournament.

Victory Over Fresno State Highlighs Rain-Shortened Tourney

Although the Bruins finished tied for third place at the Campbell/Cartier Tournament, the highlight of the weekend for UCLA was the late-inning rally to tie and eventually defeat the third-ranked Fresno State squad in Saturday's tournament action.

The game, which was ultimately the final game of the tournament for both teams because of Sunday's rainstorms, took place on Saturday evening and featured a game-tying home run by freshman Tairia Mims, her fourth of the season. With two out in the top of the seventh inning and a 2-1 count, Mims homered over the right field fence to tie the game at 2-2. An eighth-inning rally that included an RBI groundout by Julie Adams and a two-run single by Dale gave UCLA the 5-2 victory.

No-Hitter Kicks Off 2000 Season

The last time UCLA had a no-hitter on opening day, the team went on to win the 1999 NCAA Championship. Amanda Freed pitched UCLA's 58th and 59th no-hitters in program history (since 1980) last year, with one on opening day against Santa Clara and a second one against Missouri on March 6th. Dale had never pitched a no-hitter at UCLA before February 4, when the Bruins defeated Maryland, 9-0, in five innings.

Freshmen Shine in Opening Weekend

All four of UCLA's softball-only freshmen started all six games at USF, and three of the four started their collegiate careers with hits. In the second inning of the season opener against Maryland, Toria Auelua singled, Tairia Mims hit a towering home run down the left field line, and Monique Mejia followed with a single down the left field line. Natasha Watley started all six games at shortstop, and turned in her first collegiate hit against South Florida, a double down the left field line.

Head Coach Sue Enquist

The reigning Pac-10 Coach of the Year, Enquist is in her 21st year as a member of the UCLA coaching staff and 25th season as either a player or coach at UCLA. She solely took over the role of UCLA's head coach in 1997, following the retirement of longtime Bruin coach Sharron Backus. The two served as co-head coaches from 1989-96. Following a brilliant UCLA playing career (1975-78), Enquist was away from the Bruins for only one season before returning as assistant coach in 1980. She held that position for nine years (1980-88) before being elevated to co-head coach prior to the 1989 season. Since then, the Bruins have compiled a 547-106 (.838) record.

Schedule Summary

A vote by the Pac-10 coaches has reduced the conference schedule by seven games, and for that reason, the Bruins are playing in more tournaments than in past years. UCLA kicks off the 2000 season at the USF-Louisville Slugger Tournament in Tampa, Fla., with pool play against Maryland, Tennessee, and host South Florida. From there, the Bruins travel to the Paradise Softball Classic hosted by Hawai'i, then the Campbell/Cartier Tournament, hosted by San Diego State. Two home doubleheaders break up the tournament schedule, as the Bruins return to Easton Stadium to host Cal State Northridge and No. 3 Fresno State the last weekend in February. Two more tournaments, the Torero Invitational Classic hosted by the University of San Diego, and the Hallowell Chevrolet Classic at Fresno State, close out UCLA's non-conferenece schedule.

Volleyball's Fendrick Added to Softball Roster

There is one addition to the Bruin roster as printed in the media guide, as freshman volleyball player Lauren Fendrick has been added to the softball team. Fendrick, a starting outside hitter for the NCAA Regional Finalist Bruin volleyball team, is listed as a 6-2 pitcher for the softball Bruins.

Status Report

Sophomore Erin Rahn is out with a stress reaction in her left foot.
