Walnut Creek, Calif. - UCLA junior RHP Hector Ambriz was named the Pacific-10 Conference Pitcher of the Week for March 7-13, Pac-10 commissioner Tom Hansen announced Tuesday.
Ambriz, from Placentia, Calif., receives his first career Pac-10 honor after earning his third victory of the season with a dominating performance against No. 19 Ole Miss on Friday, leading UCLA to a 9-2 win.
Ambriz tossed a season-high 8.0 innings with a career-best 10 strikeouts, as he opened the game retiring the first 11-consecutive batters he faced. Ambriz finished his outing striking out five of last six Rebels that came to the plate, giving up only one run on three hits in the process.
On the season, Ambriz is 3-3 with a 3.58 ERA and 30 strikeouts in 37.2 innings pitched.
The UCLA pitching staff has earned back-to-back Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week honors, as Ambriz follows last week's recipient Tyson Brummett. Ambriz earned UCLA's 39th Pac-10 honor all-time.
