This Week - Homestand Concludes With Three Matches
Stepping out of conference action on Tuesday, April 6, UCLA will host No. 21 Texas A&M. The Bruins conclude the home portion of the schedule this weekend hosting Pac-10 foes No. 59 Oregon on Friday, April 9 at 1:30 p.m. and No. 15 Washington on Saturday the 10th at Noon.
Latest Rankings - Bruins Retain No. 1 Ranking
UCLA continued to hold the No. 1 slot in the latest edition of the ITA national rankings released on March 22. The Bruins have one individual listed among the top-10 in singles and two more among the top-100. In addition, two UCLA teams are among the top-20 in doubles. Leading the way in singles is sophomore Jean-Noel Grinda who climbed to No. 6. Narrowly holding onto their singles rankings were junior Brandon Kramer who is listed No. 99 and senior Jason Cook who is tied for No. 100. Cook and Kramer are the Bruins top-doubles team climbed to No. 6 in the nation, while the team of Grinda and junior Jong-Min Lee moved up to No. 19. The next edition of the ITA National Rankings will be released on Tuesday, April 6.
About This Week's Opponents - Texas A&M, Oregon, UW
Listed No. 21 in the latest edition of the national rankings, Texas A&M owns a 12-3 overall record after loosing, 5-2, at Pepperdine on Sunday. The Aggies are led by Shuon Madden who is 20-7 overall, 9-4 in duals and listed No. 30 in the national singles rankings. Madden and doubles partner Dumitru Caradima are currently the No. 1 ranked tandem in the nation and own an overall record of 18-2, 9-2 in duals.
Friday's opponent, Oregon is listed No. 59 in the rankings entering the week with a record of 7-11 overall and 0-4 in Pac-10 Conference action. The Ducks do not currently have any players listed in singles or doubles national rankings.
The final home opponent, Washington, enters the week ranked No. 15 in the nation with an overall record of 15-6 and a 2-2 Pac-10 mark. The Huskies play at USC on Friday, before coming to Westwood. Two UW players are listed among the nation's top-50 in singles and also form a highly ranked doubles team. Listed No. 4 in the national singles rankings, Robert Kendrick owns a 25-6 overall record and is 14-3 in duals at both the No. 1 and 2 positions. Eric Drew is listed No. 43 in the rankings and owns a record of 14-5 overall and in duals, also seeing time in both the No. 1 and 2 slots. The doubles team of Drew/Kendrick is ranked No. 14 and stands 11-3, all in the No. 1 position.
Latest Results - Pac-10 Wins Over Stanford & Cal
UCLA posted a pair of important Pac-10 Conference victories over the weekend, defeating No. 4 ranked Stanford, 5-2, and No. 31 Cal, 6-1. The Bruins claimed the doubles point each day as the No. 1 team of Jason Cook/Brandon Kramer and the No. 3 duo of Marcin Rozpedski/Chris Sands posted the wins in both.
In singles action, Jean-Noel Grinda claimed two wins in the top-slot, as did Jong-Min Lee in the No. 4 position and Kramer at No. 5. Rozpedski notched a win against Cal on court No. 6, while Sands lost his match against Stanford in his only singles action. Cook and Zack Fleishman both split their matches in the No. 2 and 3 slots, respectively over the weekend. Cook won against Stanford and Fleishman against Cal.
Next Up - UCLA Takes Final Dual-Match Roadtrip
The final regular-season dual-match roadtrip has the Bruins traveling to the Bay Area to again face the University of California and Stanford. UCLA plays at Cal on Friday, April 16 at 1:30 p.m, then at Stanford on Saturday, April 17 at Noon. Following this trip only the Pac-10 Individual Championships and NCAA action remains on the schedule.
