Box Score

WICHITA, KS - UCLA (25-20) could not withstand a late surge by 12th-ranked Wichita State (32-9) as the Shockers scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to claim a 6-4 win on Tuesday night.

A single from Drew Moffitt drove in the game-winning run before Phil Napolitan provided an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth frame.

The Bruins got on the scoreboard first with a run in the top of the fourth frame. Mike Svetlic would record the first UCLA hit of the game with one out in the inning. He would come around and score on an error by the center fielder.

In the fifth inning, UCLA would increase its lead to four runs with three more. Brandon Averill led off the frame with a single. Aaron Markel would attempt to sacrifice Averill to second, but an error by first baseman Logan Sorensen would allow the runners to move to second and third. A single from Sean Carpenter brought Averill into score. After Jarrad Page was walked to load the bases, Preston Griffin would be hit by a pitch to drive in another run. Carpenter would be thrown out at home plate on a fielder's choice before Ryan McCarthy drove Page in with a single. At the end of five innings, UCLA led 4-0.

Wichita State would get on the board in the bottom of the sixth when back-to-back walks would turn into runs. Kenny Waddell drove in both runs with a single to right field.

Two more Shockers crossed the plate in the bottom of the seventh. A single from Phil Napolitan and a double from Nick McCoola would drive in the runs.

David Johnson pitched 5.1 innings in the start. The junior right-hander held the Shockers to three hits and tallied a career-high seven strikeouts on the night. He faced the minimum through the first five innings.

Six different Bruins recorded hits on the night. McCarthy extended his hitting streak to 13 games, which is a team-high in 2004.

The Shockers and Bruins will face off again tomorrow night at Eck Stadium, Home of Tyler Field. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
