Cross Country Teams to Compete at Roy Griak Invitational

Bob Larsen's UCLA men's and Eric Peterson Bruin women's cross country teams will travel to Minneapolis, MN this Saturday (Sept. 26) to compete in the Roy Griak (Gree-ack) Invitational, held on the University of Minnesota Golf Course.

The men's 8K race will begin at 9 a.m. PDT and the women's 5K course will start at 10 a.m. Along with host Minnesota and UCLA, 19 other Div. I teams will be competing, including national cross country powers Arizona, Northern Arizona and Wisconsin.

This is the first major meet of the season for the Bruin squads and both UCLA coaches will be taking their top teams. Competing for the UCLA men will be- -senior Mark Hauser, a two-time NCAA indoor track All-American; juniors, Will Bernaldo, Dan Brecht and Matt Pitts; sophomore Paul Muite and Jess Strutzel, who placed fifth in the NCAA outdoor 800m last spring, and freshmen, Bryan Green and Martin Brix.

Running for the UCLA women will be senior Zalika Davis; juniors, Melinda George, an NCAA outdoor qualifier last spring in the 3,000m, Kara Barnard and Christina Bowen; sophomore Kelly Cohn, Katie Nuanes and Julie Ott, who placed 12th in the NCAA outdoor 10,000m last spring, and freshman Elaine Canchola.

Last Saturday (Sept. 19), UCLA competed in the Aztec Invitational in San Diego. The Bruin women placed third (104) out of 12 teams, behind winner Arizona (42) and second-place Arkansas (54). UCLA's men's B team was fourth (137) out of nine teams, behind winner Arizona (16), Southern Utah University (79) and Long Beach State-A (134).

The Bruin women had two runners in the top 20 and a total of five runners in the top 26 positions. Over 5,000m, Cohn paced the Bruins by finishing 10th (18:01), with Bowen in 19th place (18:39). Canchola, a true freshman, placed 24th (18:45), Ott was 25th (18:46) and George was 26th (18:50). The winner of the women's race was Arizona's Amy Skieresz, the defending NCAA cross country champion, in a time of 17:03.

UCLA's B team had one runner in the top 15 and a total of four performers in the top 30 placements. Leading the Bruin men was Brecht, who finished 14th (26.47). Placing behind him were Brix (27th, 27:21), Strutzel (27th, 27:30) and sophomore Scott Abbott (30th, 27:32). Arizona's Addi Addirahman won the men's 8,000m race in a time of 24:46. After the meet at Minnesota, the Bruins will compete in the UC San Diego Invitational on Oct. 3.
