Mission Bay, Calif. - The UCLA women's rowing team competed in the first day of the 30th Annual San Diego Crew Classic Regatta. With a win in the Women's Cal Cup Heat A and a second place finish in the Women's Collegiate Novice Heat B, both the women's varsity eight and novice eight qualified for tomorrow's grand finals. The Bruin second varsity eight finished sixth in the Women's JV Heat A, and later placed third in the Women's JV 3RD Level Final to finish 15th overall.
In the Women's Cal Cup Heat A, UCLA faced the University of San Diego, Southern Methodist University, Sacramento State, UC Irvine, Villanova, and Long Beach State. After the first 500 meters, USD had a slight advantage over UCLA, SMU, and Sacramento State, but the Bruins would gain a 4-second advantage over USD halfway into the race and would never relinquish the lead. The UCLA women's varsity eight won the preliminary race in 7:22.50 and qualified for the Women's Cal Cup Grand Final scheduled for 2:10 p.m. tomorrow, April 6. The University of San Diego (7:25.28) finished second, followed by SMU (7:27.53), Sacramento State (7:35.17), UC Irvine (7:35.51), Villanova (7:40.63), and Long Beach State (7:49.27).
In the Women's Collegiate Novice Heat B, the UCLA novice eight faced Washington, UC Davis, University of San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, Sacramento State, and Long Beach State. Washington won the preliminary race in 7:46.60, and UCLA finished second in 7:51.07. Both the Huskies and the Bruins will compete in the Women's Collegiate Novice Grand Final scheduled for 11:00 a.m. tomorrow, April 6. UC Davis (7:51.53) finished third, followed by USD (8:15.73), UC Santa Barbara (8:23.28), Sacramento State (8:48.50), and Long Beach State (9:06.11).
The UCLA second varsity eight (8:15.07) competed in the Women's JV Heat A and finished sixth behind Washington (7:29.33), Stanford (7:38.17), Clemson (7:49.89), and Massachusetts (7:51.83). The University of San Diego (8:21.70) and Humboldt (8:33.08) followed the Bruins. With the sixth place finish in the preliminary race, the Bruin second varsity eight qualified for Women's JV 3RD Level Final held later in the afternoon.
In the Women's JV 3RD Level Final, the UCLA second varsity eight placed third in 7:51.87, behind Duke (7:28.9) and San Diego State (7:48.68), to finish 15th overall. The University of San Diego (8:03.17) finished fourth in the event, followed by Santa Clara (8:06.85), and SMU (8:13.18).
