UCLA Men's Track & Field Announces 2003 National Letter of Intent Signees

Coach Art Venegas announced the 2003 National Letter of Intent signees on Tuesday, June 24. Micky Cobrin, Gregory Garza, Brandon Johnson and Philip Nossmy will join Fall signees John Caulfield and Jeffrey Jacobs as true freshmen in 2003.

Micky Cobrin (distance runner) is from Buffalo Grove, IL/Stevenson High School. At the 2003 Illinois State meet, he placed second in the 3200m finals in 9:21.40 and fourth in the 1600m finals in 4:18.57 (4:17.51 prelims). At the 2002 Illinois State Cross Country Championships, Cobrin placed seventh in 14:46, leading Stevenson HS to second place.

Gregory Garza (throws), from Indio, CA/Indio High School, is regarded as an excellent throws prospect. A CIF qualifier in the discus, Garza won the discus invitational at the 2003 Mt. SAC Relays with a throw of 184-0 (56.00m). Also at this year's Mt. SAC Relays, he was 10th in the shot put invitational with a throw of 52-7 (16.02m). Garza has a personal best of 191-0 in the discus.

Brandon Johnson (sprints) is from Orange, TX/W. Orange Start High School. At the 2003 Texas State 4A Championships, he won the 400m in 46.83, No. 8 prep mark in 2003. He had a season best of 10.44 in the 100m. At the 2002 Texas State 3A Championships, he placed third in the 300m hurdles in 37.81. A multi-sport athlete in high school, Johnson also lettered in football, but will concentrate on track and field at UCLA.

Philip Nossmy (sprints/hurdles), from Malmo, Sweden, is considered one of the top international junior 110m hurdlers and sprinters. In September 2000, he set the Swedish Junior 100m hurdles record at 13.63. Nossmy also competed at the World Junior Championships in 2002.
