LOS ANGELES - The 16th-ranked UCLA women's tennis team began the conference part of its season on a good note Friday, defeating Washington State, 7-0 on a rare cold and windy afternoon at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. With the win, the Bruins improve to 8-2 overall and 1-0 in the Pac-10. The Cougars drop to 5-6 and 0-1 in conference action.
Due to a light early-morning rain and more showers forecasted for later in the day, both coaches agreed to start Friday's dual with singles first in order to get the match in.
Not long after play began, UCLA's Anna-Viktoria Lind, Elizabeth Lumpkin and Alex McGoodwin all cruised to convincing straight-set wins, giving the Bruins a 3-0 lead. That set the stage for 24th-ranked Laura Gordon, who clinched the win for UCLA with a 6-1, 6-2 decision over 84th-ranked Ekaterina Burduli at the No. 1 position. It marked only the second match of the year for Gordon at the No. 1 spot.
With the match already decided, the Bruins and Cougars decided to play doubles at the Nos. 1 and 2 positions only, with UCLA winning 8-0 at both courts.
UCLA is scheduled to host Washington tomorrow at Noon. That match is part of a double-header with the UCLA men's team, which will take on No. 7 Baylor beginning at 5:00 p.m.
