Box Score

Seattle - UCLA showed true grit with a 3-2 win over Washington in 11 innings on Saturday afternoon at Husky Ballpark. After cruising for eight innings to a 2-0 lead, UCLA gave up two runs in bottom of the ninth inning, but rallied in the 11th inning for the game winning run to improve to 16-12 overall and 1-1 in the Pac-10 Conference.

Eric Taylor, Jr. went 3-for-5 with the game winning RBI, freshman Blair Dunlap hit 2-for-5 with a run scored, and senior Chris Jensen went 2-for-5. Senior Josh Roenicke hit his first-career home run with a solo bomb in the seventh inning.

Junior Dave Huff tossed 9.0 innings for the Bruins allowing one earned run on 10 hits with seven strikeouts. Huff threw 8.1 shutout innings and retired nine-consecutive batters from the fifth to the eighth inning in a no decision. Junior Paul Oseguera (1-0) earned his first win of the season with 2.0 innings of relief work in the extra frames with two strikeouts.

UCLA took a 1-0 lead over UW in the top of the third inning. Dunlap gave the Bruins a runner with a one-out single to left field. Jensen then singled to right center field with two outs allowing Dunlap scored from first base as Husky center fielder Matt Hague slipped while charging the ball on the play.

Washington had a great opportunity to score in the fifth inning after the Huskies loaded the bases with one out on a bloop single to right field and two dribbler infield singles. Huff got out of the major jam by getting Hague to ground into a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning.

Roenicke gave UCLA a 2-0 lead in the seventh inning with a solo home run to left field.

Huff took his eight shutout innings into the ninth inning looking for the complete game, but Washington rallied to tie the game at 2-2 in its last at bat. After giving up an infield single to Curt Rindal and a walk to Zach Clem, Trevor Peterson grounded to third with one out where Taylor tagged the bag for the second out but threw the ball away at first to keep the inning alive. Matt Stevens followed with an infield single to third to score Clem from third base to put the score at 2-1, and Ryan Anderson hit a pinch hit single that bounced over Taylor with two outs to score pinch runner Michael Burgher from third and tied the game at 2-2.

The Bruins regained the lead at 3-2 in the 11th inning after senior Sean Smith doubled down the left field line with two outs and then scored on a single to left center field by Taylor that proved to be the game winner.

UCLA and Washington will play the final game of the three-game series on Sunday, April 2 at 1 p.m.
