UCLA Baseball's Brandon Crawford Earns Gold Medal with U.S. National Team

Havana, Cuba - The USA Baseball National Team captured its second straight FISU (International University Sports Federation) World Championship with an 18-9 win over Chinese Taipei on Tuesday evening at Latino Stadium. UCLA sophomore shortstop Brandon Crawford finished the summer with a .257 batting average in 23 games played.

Crawford started 10 games at shortstop for the U.S. National Team and collected two doubles, six RBI, three walks, seven runs scored and one stolen base. The Pleasanton, Calif., native hit 9-for-35 at the plate, including one 3-for-3 performance against the Czech Republic on Wednesday, Aug. 9 at Latino Stadium in Havana.

The U.S. National Team finished its summer campaign with a 28-2-1 mark and successfully defended its gold medal won in the 2004 FISU tournament in Taiwan. The .919 win percentage is the best ever by a USA Baseball collegiate team and the tournament win was the first ever for a USA Baseball National Team in Cuba.
