One Isn't The Loneliest Number

April 11, 2001

UCLA's women's and men's track and field teams are nationally rated in this week's (April 9) collegiate track and field polls.

There are two weekly national collegiate polls, Trackwire Top 25 and Team Power Ranking, sponsored by the IAAF and the USATF. Trackwire is based on how teams should score at the upcoming NCAA Outdoor Championships, May 30-June 2 in Eugene, OR. Team Power Ranking is based on the strength of a team's individual marks and dual meet strength.

Jeanette's Bolden's Bruin women's team is rated No. 1 (out of 49 teams that have recorded its top marks) in the U. S. on the Team Power Ranking chart, with a score of 365.85, ahead of Washington State (356.86), BYU (342.62), Fresno State (337.66) and USC (335.39). On the Trackwire Top 25, UCLA is No. 2, with 65 points, behind No. 1 USC (75) and ahead of South Carolina, Arizona and BYU, all tied for third-place with 42 points. The Bruin women are the two-time defending NCAA Indoor Champions and last spring placed third at the NCAA Outdoor meet.

Art Venegas' UCLA men's team also sits at No. 1 (out of 50 schools that have recorded its top marks) on the Team Power Ranking chart, with a score of 345.96, ahead of Tennessee (345.47), USC (343.22), Texas (333.54) and Washington State (332.6). On the Trackwire Top 25, UCLA is 23rd with 12 points.

On Saturday (April 14), the Bruins will host Nebraska and CS Northridge in their final home meet of the season at Drake Stadium. Field events begin at 9:30 a.m. and running events at noon. In this week's Trackwire Top 25, the Nebraska women are No. 25 (the Cornhusker men are not ranked).

Looking ahead, the nationally rated UCLA and USC squads are headed for their annual dual meet showdown on Saturday, May 5 at USC. The Bruin men have won the last 22 duals in a row (USC leads the series 38-29) and the UCLA women have won the last eight consecutive dual meets and lead the series 13-3.
