LOS ANGELES - The 2000 USA Track & Field Trials, to determine the U. S. team that will be sent to the upcoming Summer Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, will be held July 14-23 in Sacramento. The Trials will take place at Hornet Stadium on the CS Sacramento campus. NBC will provide eight hours of live network television coverage on the four weekend days.

The Trials will be spread over 10 days with July 17-18 serving as off days. The top three finishers who have met the Olympic qualifying standards for the 20 men?s and 19 women's events will earn a spot on the U. S. Olympic team. The dates for the Summer Games in Sydney are Sept. 22-Oct. 1.

John Godina and Gail Devers are just two of former Bruin greats who will be competing in Sacramento to earn a spot on the U. S. Olympic team. Devers entered this season ranked No. 1 in the world in the 100m hurdles and No. 5 in the 100m. Devers has won Gold in the 100m at the last two Olympics. In fact, a Bruin woman has won the Olympic 100m for the last four Summer Games (1996, '92-Devers, 1988, Florence Griffth Joyner, 1984, Evelyn Ashford).

Godina entered this season ranked No. 4 in the world in the shot put and No. 7 in the discus. A former world champion in the shot put, Godina at the '96 Summer Games in Atlanta won a Silver Medal in the shot put.

Another former Bruin great to watch is sprinter Michael Marsh. At the '96 Games, Marsh won a Silver Medal on the U. S. 4 X 100m relay and at the 1992 Games in Barcelona, Spain, Marsh won two Golds, in the 200m and on the U. S. 4 X 100m relay.

Current Bruins who have an excellent chance to make the U. S. team include thrower Seilala Sua and vaulter Tracy O'Hara. Sua, who just completed here senior season, is the two-time defending USA discus champion. While at UCLA, she set a record by winning six NCAA Outdoor throwing titles.

O'Hara, who will be a junior in 2000-2001, this season won both the NCAA Outdoor and Indoor vault titles and set the collegiate outdoor (14-7 1/4) and indoor records (14-6).
