Stewart To Assist In UCLA Basketball Office
By: UCLA Athletics

Aug. 22, 2002

Gary Stewart, who for the last three seasons has been an assistant coach at Washington State, is the newest member of the UCLA men's basketball office. As a volunteer administrative assistant, Stewart will be assisting Bruin head coach Steve Lavin and his staff with office duties and limited film work.

Stewart, 41, is entering his 21st season at the four-year level of collegiate basketball as either a head coach, assistant coach, administrative assistant or player. While at Washington State, Stewart was involved in all aspects of the Cougar program, including floor coaching, game preparation, recruiting, monitoring of academics and opponent scouting. Prior to Washington State, he was an assistant at UC Santa Barbara (1997-98).

Before becoming an assistant coach at WSU and UCSB, Stewart was a head coach for 10 seasons at two schools in California - then NCAA Div. II CS Hayward (1995-97) and at his alma mater, NCAA Div. III La Verne (1987-95). While at Hayward, he was the 1997 Northern California Athletic Conference Coach of the Year and led the Pioneers to the NCAC championship. At LaVerne, Stewart was a three-time (1993-91-90) Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year and in 1993 he led the Leopards to the NCAA Div. III "Sweet 16", the school's first NCAA Tournament appearance. Stewart has the highest winning percentage (66.7) in La Verne history and the second-highest number of victories (138) at the school. In his first season (1987-88) at La Verne, at the age of 24, he was the youngest collegiate head basketball coach at a four-year institution in the U. S. His 10-year head coaching record was 169-91 (CS Hayward 31-22; La Verne 138-69).

Before becoming head coach at La Verne, Stewart was an assistant coach at Long Beach State from 1984-86.

A 1984 graduate from La Verne, Stewart is one of the best players in school history. During his four-year career, he was a two-time Academic All-American, four-time All-Conference and three-time All-District selection. A three-year captain, Stewart ranks in the school's career Top 10 in virtually every statistical category. He also earned his Master of Arts degree in education from La Verne in 1995.

In 2001, Stewart was selected as a YES clinician for the NCAA Div. I Men's Final Four. He is a member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and a member of the NABC Assistant Coaches Board of Directors, the Black Coaches Associations (BCA) and Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). He has earned several honors throughout his career, including The Outstanding Young Men of America Award (1984) and being named Who's Who Among Black Americans (1989) and Who's Who Among Rising Young Americans (1990).

Stewart was born on July 24, 1961 in Los Angeles and he is a 1980 graduate of Blair HS in Pasadena.
