Irvine, Calif. - The third-ranked UCLA men's water polo team gave up the game-winning goal with 40 seconds left in the final period, dropping a 7-8 decision to No. 6 UC Irvine in a MPSF conference match at the Anteater Aquatics Complex on Thursday night. The Bruins fall to 17-6 overall and 3-2 in MPSF play, while the Anteaters improve to 15-10 and 5-2 in MPSF competition.
UCLA received goals from seven different players as senior John Blanchette, junior Thomas Foley, sophomores Justin Johnson, Marco Santos, and Matthew Jacobs, and freshmen Patrick Morrison and Krsto Sbutega all scored a goal apiece.
Junior goalkeeper Will Didinger tallied a game-high seven saves.
UCLA jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead over the Anteaters in the first few minutes of the game, and led 3-1 after the first period. Two more goals in the second period would put the Bruins up 5-2 over UC Irvine at the half.
UCLA would go scoreless in the third period, as the Anteaters trimmed the Bruins' lead to 5-4. Sbutega would score at 6:01 in the fourth to put the Bruins up 6-4, but that goal was answered by UC Irvine's Tim Hutten at the 5:44 with UCLA leading 6-5. Foley would put UCLA up 7-5 with 5:06 left in the game, but the Bruins would go scoreless the rest of the way.
UC Irvine's Dreason Barry would cut the Bruins' lead to 7-6 at the 4:43 mark, and a goal by UCI's Cole Bitter tied the match at 7-7 with 3:24 left in the final period. With 40 seconds left in the match, UC Irvine's Chris Peters scored the decisive goal.
UCLA will next return home to host No. 5 Pepperdine on Saturday Nov. 12 at 1 p.m. in the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center.
