LOS ANGELES -Breaking a streak of eight matches ending in 4-3 scores, the No. 8 UCLA women's tennis team swept local rival Loyola Marymount 7-0 on Friday in a non-conference showdown at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. UCLA, which gained its third sweep of the season, won all its singles matches playing with five freshmen and one sophomore, all of whom are in their first season of dual-match play.
The Bruins started out by winning all three doubles matches. Jackie Carleton and Susi Wild teamed together to beat Edit Pakay and Diana Vinis 8-4 at the No. 1 spot, while Sara Walker and Laura Gordon bested LMU's Georgina Dinham and Jennifer Baker 8-3 in the No. 2 position. At No. 3 doubles, UCLA's Shilpa Joshi and Anya Loncaric beat Patrycia Hubl and Erin Sanchez 8-0.
Bruin freshman Nina Yaftali saw her first action in a dual match this year, defeating Sanchez 6-0, 6-0 on court No. 6. Joshi recorded her second singles win in three tries, beating Hubl 6-3, 6-3, while Gordon won 6-3, 6-1 over Baker on court No. 4.
Wild, who made her first appearance in the ITA singles rankings Wednesday checking in at No. 42, won her match against Vinis 6-3, 6-2. Loncaric played at the third singles position for the first time this year, beating Dinham 6-1, 6-0. The last match of the afternoon went to Carleton, who beat Pakay, 6-4, 6-1.
The Lions fall to 1-4 on the year, while the Bruins raise their record to 8-4. UCLA opens the Pac-10 season next Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at USC's Marks Tennis Stadium.
