All three of these matches begin at 1:30 p.m. at the Los Angeles Tennis Center on the UCLA campus and admission is FREE.
About This Week's Opponents Led by the No. 1 ranked singles player in the country, Zuzana Lesenarova, the University of San Diego is ranked No. 33 in the nation. The Toreros opened dual-match action at the UA Invitational last weekend posting a 1-2 record with losses to Mississippi and Arizona and a win over Kansas State. Lesenarova, who won the first two legs of the ITA grand slam already this season, suffered a three-set loss to No. 3 ranked Agnes Muzamel of Mississippi in the first dual of the year. UCLA did not face San Diego last year, but owns an 11-0 series record vs. the Toreros. Unranked Arizona also opened dual-match action last weekend, hosting the UA Invitational and registering an impressive win over San Diego. Monique Allegre is playing the top-slot for the Wildcats who battled UCLA to a 5-4 decision in Tucson last year, then fell 9-0 in Los Angeles. UCLA leads the UA series 38-7. The highest ranked team on tap for the week is No. 12 Arizona State which opened dual-match action with a sweep of No. 29 New Mexico on Sunday. ASU posted two wins over UCLA last year to cut the Bruins' all-time series lead to 32-11. The Sun Devils, led by several ranked players and the No. 17 doubles team of Allison Bradshaw and Katy Propstra, play at USC on Friday before coming to UCLA.
The Bruins' Last Week Although the season opener was delayed a day, UCLA open dual match action posting a solid 9-0 sweep over Loyola Marymount. Starting the season ranked No. 11 and playing in the top-slot, sophomore Cristina Popescu was the only Bruin to be extended to three-sets. Popescu dropped the opening set, then regrouped for solid wins in two and three. Juniors Amanda Basica and Katia Roubanova returned from injuries which plagued them last year to each register impressive wins in the No. 2 and 4 positions. With two players being rested, senior captain Brandi Freudenberg stepped up to the No. 3 slot where she did not drop a game en route to victory. Rookies Petya Marinova and Rochelle Raiss also posted big wins in their UCLA dual-match debuts.
Next Up The Bruins host local rival Pepperdine on Tuesday, Feb. 2 at 1:30 p.m., then send individuals to compete in the Rolex National Indoor Championships in Dallas, Feb. 4-7.
