HONOLULU, HAWAII - The third-ranked UCLA women's volleyball team improved to 5-0 on the young season with a sweep of No. 17 Santa Clara (3-1) on Thursday night at the Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Challenge in Honolulu. Senior Heather Cullen was the only Bruin with double figure kills, turning in 10 for the match. Game scores were 30-23, 32-30, 30-24. Thursday's victory matches UCLA's best season start since the 2001 season.
Both teams struggled with their accuracy in the match, with the Broncos turning in a .096 team attack percentage while UCLA hit .152 as a team for the match. In addition to Cullen's 10 kills, the Bruins were led by Becky Green with nine kills and a match-high .350 attack percentage, while Chrissie Zartman had a match-high 24 digs. Nana Meriwether and Green each had a part in three of the team's nine blocks in the match.
UCLA returns to action on Friday evening at Hawaii's Stan Sherriff Center when they play Southwest Missouri State at 8 pm Pacific Time. The Bruins complete their Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Volleyball Challenge schedule with a 10 pm PT match against No. 11 Hawai'i on Saturday night.
