LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The UCLA men's water polo team has been ranked No. 3 in the 2001 preseason Collegiate Water Polo Poll. The Bruins finished last season with the top ranking in the poll after claiming their second consecutive NCAA championship.
"The first poll of the season slants heavily toward the previous year's results," Bruin Head Coach Adam Krikorian said. "We'll know where each team stands after the [Sept. 15-16] SoCal Tournament."
USC and Stanford share the top spot in the poll, each earning 92 points out of a possible 100. UCLA, California, and Pepperdine round out the top five. The Bruins' schedule includes matches against 11 of the top 12 opponents in the poll, omitting only 2000 NCAA runner-up UC San Diego.
UCLA opens its 2001 season against UC Irvine at noon on Saturday at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center on the UCLA campus.
