REDWOOD CITY, Calif.-- Electronic Arts (NASDAQ: ERTS) today announced a three-year agreement with KemperLesnik Communications Sports Marketing making EA SPORTS(tm) the title sponsor of the Maui Invitational hosted by Chaminade University. Electronic Arts' EA SPORTS brand becomes the first corporate sponsor in the tournament's 18-year history.
The EA SPORTS Maui Invitational is scheduled for November 19-21, 2001 at the 2,400-seat Lahaina Civic Center, Maui, Hawaii. In addition to Chaminade, the 18th annual tournament will feature men's basketball teams including Duke University--the 2001 NCAA Champions--in addition to UCLA, Kansas, Ball State, Houston, Seton Hall and South Carolina. At least six games will be televised live on ESPN networks.
"As sponsors of the EA SPORTS Maui Invitational, and publishers of NBA LIVE, NCAA March Madness, and NBA Street, we're excited about showcasing our passion for the sport of basketball, and thrilled to be a part of this elite pre-season college basketball tournament," said Carolyn Feinstein, vice president of marketing and communications. "The Maui Invitational provides EA SPORTS with an ideal opportunity to bring our longstanding positioning of 'in the game' to a new level, by taking extending our passion for sport beyond the game and onto the court".
Basketball has dominated the interactive basketball entertainment through industry leading franchises such as NBA LIVE, NCAA® March Madness(tm), and its new streetball title, NBA Street. EA SPORTS also created and sponsors the EA SPORTS All-Stars, a college exhibition basketball program comprised of former college basketball players who play for regional EA SPORTS teams against top-notch NCAA basketball programs. EA is also dedicated to supporting high school basketball and is the title sponsor of the EA SPORTS Roundball Classic, a game honoring high school All-Americans each spring.
"EA SPORTS and the Maui Invitational are such a great match," adds Steve Lesnik, Chief Executive Officer of the KemperLesnik Sports Marketing Group, which produces the event on behalf of Chaminade. "EA SPORTS brings additional resources and marketing expertise to the tournament, offering us the opportunity to broaden our appeal for the benefit of the tournament, college basketball and Chaminade University."
"The Maui Visitors Bureau is excited that EA Sports is becoming a member of our marketing team and look forward to working with them," explains Marsha Wienert, executive director of the Maui Visitors Bureau. "The Maui Invitational is one of the premier sporting events on the island of Maui and we look forward to its continued success."
