UCLA sophomore golfer Chris Heintz lost in the first round of match play competition at the 104th U.S. Amateur Championship, hosted by Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, NY.
Heintz fell 1-up to Dayton Rose of Midwest City, Okla., although he had a chance to square the match after Rose double-bogeyed the 17th hole. Down two holes, Heintz fashioned a par on the 449-yard 17th, while Rose carded a six. With Rose's lead at 1-up on the 18th, both players recorded pars, and Rose advanced.
Earlier in the match Heintz held a 2-hole lead through seven holes. After both players birdied the par 3 seventh, Rose recorded birdies at the eighth and ninth holes to erase Heintz's advantage. The match remained even until the 10th when Heintz made a par and Rose bogeyed.
Rose squared the match with a par at the 12th (Heintz bogeyed), and went 2-up with a pair of pars at the 14th and 15th holes.
