LOS ANGELES - The No. 10-seeded UCLA men's tennis team began its 2005 title defense on a strong note Saturday, posting a 4-0 victory over Stony Brook in an NCAA First Round match at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The Bruins (18-5) advance to Sunday's second round and will meet Colorado (20-8) at 1:00 p.m. The Buffaloes advanced with a 4-1 victory over Arizona earlier in the day.
The Bruins took care of business in doubles, posting an 8-0 victory at court No. 1 and an 8-2 decision at court No. 3 to claim the point. UCLA was leading 5-1 at court No. 2 when play was suspended.
UCLA was equally as dominant in singles play, recording three straight-set victories to take the dual match 4-0. First to finish was Bruin junior Philipp Gruendler, who downed Youssef Fassi-Fehri, 6-0, 6-0 at court No. 4. That match was followed by court No. 1, where top-ranked Benjamin Kohlloeffel cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Stony Brook's Tal Meir.
The match was clinched at court No. 2, as Bruin freshman Haythem Abid downed Michael Crooks, 6-0, 6-2. UCLA's Mathieu Dehaine (court No. 3), Chris Surapol (court No. 5) and Michael Look (court No. 6) had all won the first set and were leading in the second set of their matches when play was suspended.
Stony Brook, the America East Champions, ends its season with a 14-7 overall record.
Sunday will mark the first-ever meeting between UCLA and Colorado in men's tennis.
