In the third meeting between the Bruins and the Cardinal this season, UCLA (10-3; 3-2) defeated the number one ranked team in the nation with a 7-3 victory in the championship game of the Uc Santa Barbara Invitational. The Bruin offense and defense were equally impressive in the match with the offense scoring seven goals against a Cardinal squad that had held the Bruins to only six total goals in the teams previous two meetings. The defense and goalkeeper Jaime Hipp continued their string of impressive play in the tournament, holding the Cardinal scoreless for two out of four quarters.
After playing to a 1-1 tie in the first quarter, the Bruins came alive in the second scoring three goals, while holding the Cardinal scoreless to take a 4-1 lead at half. In the third quarter the Cardinal would attempt a comeback, outscoring the Bruins 2-1 to make the score 5-3 going into the final quarter. However, the Bruins would not be denied, as UCLA would score two goals while again holding the Cardinal scoreless to earn the 7-3 victory.
Senior Robin Beauregard had a hat trick for the Bruins. Natalie Golda scored twice for the Bruins, giving her a total of ten goals in the tournament (in a total of four games). Rounding out the Bruin scoring effort was Ashley Stachowski and Lauren Heineck who each scored once. For the Cardinal, Lauren Faust scored twice and Brenda Villa once.
The Bruins will return home next week to face Loyola Marymount on Thursday, March 13 at 3:00 PM and Long Beach State on Friday, March 14 at Noon. Both games will be at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center.
