UCLA Women's Water Polo Prepares For Home Opener

This Week: The UCLA Bruins (2-1) begin MPSF conference play at home this weekend. The Bruins host the San Diego State Aztecs on Saturday morning at 10 am at the Sunset Recreation Center. The Aztecs head into the week with a 2-2 record and will play at UC Irvine on Friday before heading up to Los Angeles.

About the Opponents: UCLA owns a 20-3 all-time record against San Diego State, including two wins versus the Aztecs last season The Aztecs finished the 2000 season ranked sixth in the nation, with an overall record of 18-16 and 4-5 in the MPSF.

UCLA at the Stanford Invitational: UCLA finished second at the Stanford Invitational this past weekend after losing to Stanford in the final minute of the championship game, 7-6. The Bruins advanced to the championship game on Sunday after defeating the California Bears, 6-4, earlier in the day. On Saturday, UCLA defeated the Calgary Renegades, 20-5, and the San Jose State Spartans, 15-4, to advance in the tournament.

Bruin Notes: At the end of the first week, junior Elaine Zivich (Lompac, CA / Cabrillo HS) and sophomore Robin Beauregard (Huntington Beach, CA / Marina HS) lead the Bruins in scoring with five goals a piece. Both players hit the back of the net in all three of the Bruin's games. Freshman Natalie Golda ( La Habra, CA / Rosary HS) got her Bruin career off to a quick start, netting a hat trick in her first career NCAA game against San Jose State.

Head Coach Adam Krikorian: Adam Krikorian, co-head coach of the men's and women's water polo teams for the last two years, has taken over as head coach of both teams. Guy Baker, co-head coach with Krikorian, left UCLA to become the head coach of the U.S. Women's National Senior Team and National Teams Director. Krikorian has been head co-head coach since the fall of 1999, and led the women's team to the 2000 national championship while Baker was with the U.S. National team. Krikorian has been associated with UCLA for nine years, either as a student-athlete, assistant coach or co-head coach and has won eight national championships.
