LOS ANGELES - The eighth-ranked UCLA men's tennis team rebounded strong after losing the doubles point Friday, storming back to take six straight singles matches en route to a 6-1 victory over Arizona at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. With the victory, UCLA moves to 8-3 on the season. Arizona, which suffered its first loss of the year Friday, is now 8-1.
UCLA's Benjamin Kohlloeffel and Philipp Gruendler turned in the top performances of the afternoon, as the two teamed together to win the Bruins' only doubles match before each taking straight-set singles wins. Gruendler and Kohlloeffel, the 10th-ranked team in the nation, started the day with an 8-4 victory over Claudio Christen/Jeff Groslimond at court No. 1. Kohlloeffel then downed 80th-ranked Roger Matalonga, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Gruendler, meanwhile, took a 6-4, 6-4 decision over Bruno Alcala at court No. 5.
The Pac-10 counting match between these two schools will not be until an April 1 meeting in Tucson. UCLA returns to the Los Angeles Tennis Center tomorrow, hosting Arizona State at 1:00 p.m.
