Jeanette Bolden, UCLA's women's track & field head coach, on Friday announced three new National Letter of Intent signees who will compete for the Bruins as true freshmen this fall - they are, distance runner Olga Aulet-Leon (Rolling Hills Peninsula HS), hurdler Dashanta Harris (Long Beach Poly) and distance runner Monika Rothenburger (Dana Hills HS).
-Olga Aulet-Leon (Rolling Hills Peninsula HS) - At the 2004 CA State Championships, finished ninth in the 1600m (5:12.23) after qualifying for the final in 4:58.49. Also was 18th in the 3200m (11:06). Finished in a second-place tie in the CIF-SS Div. I 1600m (4:58.99) and was third in the 3200m (10:43.23, personal-best). Won the CIF Masters meet in 4:54.91 and has run a personal-best 4:54.70, set this season at the Arcadia Invitational.
-Dashanta Harris (Long Beach Poly) - Placed third in the 300m hurdles at the 2004 CA State championships in 42.68 and was second at the Golden West Invitational in the 100m hurdles (14.02). Won the 300m hurdles at the CIF SS Div. I in a personal-best 41.61 and was fourth in the CIF Masters (42.93). Set a personal-best 13.95 in the 100m hurdles at the Div. I prelims. Harris was second at the Arcadia Invitational (14.36) and won at Mt. SAC (14.03).
A Los Angeles Times first-team All-Star in the 1600m relay, Harris was a key member of Poly's outstanding 400m and 1600m relays. She ran the second leg on the Jackrabbits' 1600m relay, clocked in 3:35.49, a National and State record set at the 2004 CA State meet. Harris' performances helped Poly cruise to the State team title, 30 points ahead of second-place James Logan.
In 2003, she had a seasonal-best time of 14.01 in the 100m hurdles, No. 20 on the U. S. prep list.
-Monika Rothenburger (Dana Hills HS) - Finished 10th in the 3200m at the 2004 CA State meet in 10:54.33. She was second in both the 1600m (4:58.99) and 3200m (10:38.10, personal-best) at the CIF SS Div. 1 championships. At the CIF Masters, Rothenburger was third in the 3200m (10:41.98) and seventh in the 1600m (4:59.36). Seasonal-bests include 2:14.7 in the 800m and 4:56.38 in the 1600m.
This trio joins five other incoming Bruin women whose signings were released in December - sprinter Jolanda Diego (Oceanside El Camino), pole vaulter Megan Jamerson (Trabuco Canyon Santa Margarita), high jumper Allison Miller (Los Altos), distance runner Claire Rethmeier (Escondido San Pasqual) and pole vaulter Elizabeth Woepse (Santa Ana Mater Dei).
