Park Tied for the Lead at U.S. Women's Open

June 30, 2006

UCLA sophomore Jane Park was among the leaders at the 61st U.S. Women's Open following first round play at the Newport Country Club in Newport, RI.

Park, the 2004 U.S. Women's Amateur champion, fired a first round 69 (-2) by carding three birdies and a bogey during the first 18 holes. She is tied with former U.S. Women's Open champions Se Ri Pak and Annika Sorenstam, and LPGA Tour veteran Pat Hurst.

Six other players with UCLA affiliations also competed in Friday's first round. Former UCLA All-American and 12-year pro Kristal Parker-Manzo was tied for 69th after posting a 76 (+5) and rookie Futures Tour player and 2006 UCLA graduate Charlotte Mayorkas was tied for 92nd at 77 (+6). Second-year LPGA professional and 2004 UCLA graduate Hana Kim was tied for 108th at 78 (+7), followed by rookie professional Amie Cochran, who was tied for 122nd at 79 (+8). Incoming freshman Sydnee Michaels carded a score of 81 (+10) and was tied for 144th, followed by 36 year-old LaRee Sugg, who was tied for 148th at 82 (+11).

Thursday's entire first round was pushed ahead to Friday because of dense fog.
