March 30, 2002
FRESNO, Calif. - The 2002 Cal-Nevada Championships concluded its two-day meet at Fresno State's Warmerdam Field on Saturday, March 30. UCLA won the team championship for the men with 204 points, while Cal State Northridge won the women's team championship with 129.50 points (the Bruin women sent a partial squad and placed sixth with 69 points).
The UCLA men nearly doubled the score of the second place finisher, Fresno State, which earned 103. The Bruins finished the meet with 16 top three awards, including nine first place finishes. The Bruin men took first in the 110-hurdles, 400-hurdles, steeplechase, 4x400-relay, high jump, pole vault, shot put, and discus. Perhaps the best performance from the champion school came in both the pole vault and discus, two events in which it had four competitors in the finals. In the pit, the Bruins took first, second, fourth and fifth, while in the ring they captured first, second, fourth and sixth. Additionally, UCLA Bruins head coach Art Venegas was named Cal-Nevada Coach of the Year.
It's the second track & field invitational the Bruin men have won this season. During the indoor season, UCLA won the MPSF Championships and Venegas was the MPSF Indoor Men's Track & Field Coach of the Year.
