No. 11 UCLA Heads to the Desert . . .
After playing six of its first seven matches at home, the No. 11 UCLA women's tennis team (5-2) takes its first road trip of the season this week, heading to Arizona for matches against No. 45 Arizona (9-0) on Friday at 1:30 p.m. and No. 17 Arizona State (6-0) on Saturday at Noon. So far, UCLA's only match away from the LATC was a local trip to Pepperdine earlier this month. UCLA leads the all-time series with Arizona, 49-8 and its series with Arizona State, 42-14.

Bruins Earn Split Against Bay Area Schools . . .
UCLA lost to top-ranked Stanford, 6-0 before defeating No. 6 Cal, 4-3 in a rain-soaked weekend at the Los Angeles Tennis Center last week. UCLA and Cal were able to play only half of their match on Friday before rain suspended play until Sunday. Fearing rain again on Saturday, UCLA and Stanford skipped doubles and went right to singles, where the Cardinal took six-straight matches for the 6-0 win. UCLA and Cal returned to the courts on Sunday with the Bruins taking a 1-0 lead into the day after capturing the doubles point on Friday. UCLA then received singles wins from Tracy Lin, Alex McGoodwin and Elizabeth Lumpkin to seal the 4-3 upset.

In the Fila ITA Rankings . . .
Following last week's upset of No. 6 Cal, UCLA moved up six places to No. 11 in the latest Fila/ITA Rankings released on Wednesday. Individual rankings were also released for the first time since Jan. 10 and UCLA currently has five singles players and one doubles teams listed. Leading the way in singles is No. 33 Laura Gordon. She is followed by No. 68 Alex McGoodwin, No. 76 Riza Zalameda, No. 79 Tracy Lin and No. 100 Ashley Joelson. Gordon and Zalameda check in at No. 17 in doubles. New team rankings will be released again on Mar. 1, with individual rankings to be released again on Mar. 7.

Lumpkin Wins Clinching Match in Cal Upset . . .
Sophomore Elizabeth Lumpkin won perhaps the biggest match of her UCLA career on Sunday, taking the decisive match in the Bruins' 4-3 upset of No. 6 Cal. With the dual match tied at 3-3, all attention focused on the No. 6 singles court, where Lumpkin and Cal's Bojana Bobusic were in a tight match. After Lumpkin took the first set 6-2, Bobusic fought back for a 6-3 second-set victory. Lumpkin, however, ran away with it in the third, winning 6-1 to give UCLA the upset win.

Gordon/Zalameda Perfect in Dual-Match Play . . .
Senior Laura Gordon and sophomore Riza Zalameda have yet to lose a match together in dual-match play, posting a perfect 6-0 record. The duo, whose only loss on the year came in the quarterfinals at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic, is 7-1 overall. They recently entered the rankings for the first time this year, checking in at No. 17 nationally.

Head Coach Stella Sampras Webster . . .
Stella Sampras Webster is in her 10th season as the head coach of the UCLA women's tennis team. She owns a career record of 155-85 (.646). In her first nine seasons at UCLA, Sampras Webster guided the Bruins to eight top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championships, including five top-5 showings (1997, 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2004). In 2004, she led UCLA to the NCAA Finals for the first time since 1991. It also marked the first time since 1991 that the Bruins surpassed the 20-win mark, finishing with a 21-8 overall record.
