This Week - Bruins Travel To Pepperdine
Due to a change in the schedule, the No. 8 ranked Bruin women's tennis team will travel north on the PCH to play at non-conference rival Pepperdine on Tuesday, Feb. 2 at 2:00 p.m. Also changed on the upcoming schedule is the Mar. 19 match which now becomes a home match to be played at 1:30 pm at the LATC.
The Bruins will also send individuals to the Rolex National Indoor Championships in Dallas, Feb. 4-7. Competing in the singles draw will be sophomore Cristina Popescu, while the team of juniors Amanda Basica and Annica Cooper will play doubles. Draw information for the tournament to be played at the Brookhaven Country Club in Dallas will be available from the ITA on Wednesday, Feb. 3.
About This Week's Opponents -
Listed No. 15 in the national rankings, Pepperdine brings a 3-0 dual-match record into its match with UCLA. The Waves opened the season with wins over Minnesota (5-2) and Notre Dame (5-4) then swept (9-0) UC Irvine last week. Last year, Pepperdine won both meetings (3-6 and 4-5) with UCLA to cut the Bruins' lead in the all-time series record to 30-8. Anchoring the top singles position for Pepperdine is No. 42 ranked Angela Lawrence who is 1-2 in dual matches.
Last Week - Bruins Post Three Wins
The No. 8 Bruins posted three wins during the week including opening Pac-10 Conference action with a pair of victories. UCLA defeated No. 33 University of San Diego 8-1 on Wednesday, No. 24 Arizona 7-2 on Friday and No. 12 ASU 7-2 on Saturday.
The Bruins got solid play in singles action and from its two doubles teams. Four Bruins went undefeated in singles play during the week. Junior Annica Cooper posted a win at No. 1 and the other at No. 2 while junior Amanda Basica, senior Brandi Freudenberg and rookie Petya Marinova each registered three victories.. The Bruins' No. 1 player, sophomore Cristina Popescu went 1-1 falling at the hands of No. 1 ranked Zuzana Lesenarova of USD in three sets, but defeating ASU's Allison Bradshaw in straight sets. Junior Katia Roubanova went 2-1 during the week, while freshman Rochelle Raiss suffered a loss in her only counting match.
The Bruins' top-doubles team of Basica and Cooper notched identical 8-4 scores in each match as they defeated worthy opponents in Lesenarova and Katrina Valkyova of USD, Monique Allegre and Lindsay Blau of UA and Allison Bradshaw and Katy Propstra of ASU. The UCLA team of Marinova and Popescu also registered three victories.

The UCLA Athletic Department will celebrate the Silver Anniversary of UCLA Women's Intercollegiate Athletics on May 1, 1999. "A Celebration of Champions" dinner will honor the accomplishments of the UCLA Women's Intercollegiate Athletic Program and its athletes over the past 25 years.
